This is a little something for all those who already know a bit of knitting and crochet. I have a channel on Youtube: Ellowyn, where I will post other tutorials that are better to understand for beginners.

Doctor Who Scarf
I've started my Doctor Who Scarf on the 25th of August. This is what I have so far:
I'm gonna try knitting this with loom knitting:) Don't know how it'll turn out cause I don't do regular knitting but I'll try xD. Thanks for the pattern!
You're very welcome! Don't worry, even if you're quite new to knitting, knitting in a loom often looks much neater than simply knitting back and forth in rows. =)
The numbers tell you the number of rows you have to do of each color. Some stripes are the same size, but most of them are different. I think there is only once twice the same size of stripe in a row. If you want to loom-knit it, you need to use a stitch marker, to make sure you remember where your row starts and where it stops.
All the yarn except the brown and yellow is acrylic, because it's easier to wash. The brown is Tweed, but mostly acrylic too (70%) and the yellow is cotton. But all of the yarn is 4.5mm thick. I am using a needle of 3mm and 60cm long (~20"?. I started with a 40cm long needle, but as I progressed, the work stretched out and I had to take a bigger one. I hope I could help you. x
It is a bit longer than 6m... I don't know how much that is in feet... 18? I loom-knitted it, so I used a round needle of 3mm and 60cm length. You could also use simple needles and knit back and forth or crochet it in tunesian stitch. It weighs 1.5kg, that means 15skeins of 100g.
Excellent, my partner wants to make me one and believes there must be a pattern out there some where. How did yours turn out? She's determined to hand knit it for the correct look even though she has two machines!
It doesn't really make a difference wether she hand-knits it or with the machine. Mine turned out just fine, but very long! If she wants it to look like the actual one Tom Baker is wearing, she'll have to crochet it with a tunesian stitch.
yikes don't use tunisian stitch. It makes an even weave fabric that has a line down it like stripes. The best crochet approximation would be to do it in all single crochet stitches (sc).
HI. My daughter found your website and asked me to make this scarf for her. I'm a crocheter so I was hoping you could tell me how long one of those sections is. For example, could you measure a section that's 12 rows in knitting so I could modify for crocheting? Thanks so much for your chart and your help. This is going to be so fun to make!!!
The 12row sections are about 2-3cm long, so it's round about an inch. If I may give you an advice, don't crochet through the whole chart, my scarf ended up being nearly 13ft long so with my 5'5 I can't wear it and now have to find someone to sell it to :/
http://www.doctorwhoscarf.com/pdf/inches.pdf the doctor who scarf based on inches is at that site and if you click back and click the other links it shows background info. etc. The final scarf should be 11 inches wide and 12 feet long before fringe which is one strand each of all 7 colors.
sorry there was no edit option and I needed to revise to much. If you haven't done the scarf yet (what with my just finding your post a year later lol) I can give you best color options and a link for the same yarn that you can buy online. I live in America and can go to the stores for the links I give you to make sure that the color is what the site shows. As an example, I am using Vanna's Choice as it was said somewhere online that it was closest to the original yarn used and one of the colors is called toffee isbn: 023032861241 http://www.joann.com/lion-brand-vanna-s-choice-yarn/xprd90044.html#q=vanna%27s+choice&start=1 it looks darker on the site than it is in real life which is like a rich milk chocolate color.
I think I used a circular knitting needle of 4mm and between 60 and 80cm long. I think you mean you bought blue instead of cream? There is no grey in this pattern, it's rather cream-colored.
So, if I'm reading this correctly.....in order to make the scarf exactly like Tom Bakers I'll need to crochet this in the tunesian stitch? How many stitches wide is it?
I don't know how large exactly it is, but I'd guess around 20-25cm should do. If you're using worsted weight yarn (10-ply) like I did, you need approximately 40 stitches (make a test-piece to verify the gauge first). As you can see on the diagram, there is a total of 7 colors: cream brown yellow red purple green and blue
Lori I have done a lot of work using the tunisian stitch and large works using single crochet (sc), I, recently, learned to knit and I think that if you want to do this in all sc it will look closest to the original scarf. I have examples I can show you comparing tunisian and single crochet that I can lay next to the Dr. Who scarf I am working on so that you can see that the sc (if using a smaller hook than I was using for the thing in the picture) will look much more similar to the knitted scarf.
Hey I just found out about Google hangouts. I would love to have a live knit/crochet group chat. Look for me at crochetleo@gmail.com lets start a live knit and crochet chat group.
this site http://www.doctorwhoscarf.com/s12.html has all the info you will need to make the scarf it says 7 colors and gives color approximations at bottom of the main page showing the yellow to be close to the spice tumeric(?) and so forth and so on.

ReplyDeleteI just gave this to my daughter for Christmas...I used the loom..It is VERY long, and it was a big hit at our family Christmas.
DeleteI know what you mean. I finished mine yesterday and it burries me underneath itself...
Deletesince my mom has said she's teach me crochette I think i may do it that way myself
DeleteYou're very welcome!

DeleteIf you need a size reference this site http://www.doctorwhoscarf.com/s12.html also has a pattern based on inches per color rather than a row count.
DeleteWhat sort of yarn do you use, and needle size?

DeleteHi, It looks like "garter" st.,every row knit.Well I'm only just starting one for my son,Think it will be next winter before he gets it though!

DeleteWhovian Evelyn, did you knit it in the round and leave it as a long "tube"?
ReplyDeleteI left it as a tube, that I simply sewed close at the ends. I have to double it to wear it though ^^

Can you tell me what colors you used? I'm color blind and I want to make sure I have it right
ReplyDeleteI could only tell you the colors, I don't know which codes it was... :/
